Which Hearing Device is Best for Me?

With exciting advancements in hearing technology, there are many hearing aid devices to choose from.

So how should you go about finding the perfect device for you? Here is some information about the types of devices that are available through the dedicated technicians and manufacturers we work with at Sandia Hearing Aid Center.

Completely in the Canal Device

A completely-in-the-canal hearing aid fits inside the ear canal and is the least noticeable in the ear. This type of device reduces wind noise because the ear protects the instrument. It’s easy to use with a telephone and uses smaller batteries. However, this device does not contain volume control or directional microphones.

In the Canal Device

An in-the-canal hearing aid is custom molded and fits partly in the ear canal. This device is less visible in the ear and easy to use with a telephone. However, this type of device may not fit well in smaller ears.

Half-Shell Device

This one is a smaller version of the in-the-canal hearing aid and is custom molded. It fills the lower portion of the bowl-shaped area of the outer ear. This style is bigger than an in-the-canal hearing aid. It’s easier to handle than smaller hearing aids and some models have directional microphones and volume control. This one also fits most ear sizes and shapes.

In the Ear Device (Full-Shell)

This hearing aid device is custom made and fills most of the bowl-shaped area of the outer ear. It is more visible to others. While it may pick up wind noise, it also has volume control and is easier to insert into the ear. This device also uses larger batteries, which last longer.

Behind the Ear Device

Behind-the-ear hearing aids hook over the top of the ear and rest behind the ear. This type of hearing aid device is appropriate for almost all types of hearing loss and for people of all ages. It is the largest, most visible type of hearing aid, so it allows more amplification than some other styles.

Open Fit Device

An open fit device is a very small behind-the-ear style. This hearing aid leaves the ear canal open and is less visible to others. This device uses small batteries, but does not come with manual adjustments.

Hearing Device for me

Many factors must be considered when helping our patients choose the correct hearing aid device for them, including:

  • age
  • level and type of hearing loss
  • physical structure of each ear
  • speech understanding score (SDS)
  • experience level (first time user or existing)
  • lifestyle
  • budget

At Sandia Hearing Aid Center, we offer a range of hearing aid devices, depending on patient needs. As the pictures on this page show, there are many different styles available today.

A quick, cautionary note:

Many hearing devices may look similar, but can be very different in technology level. Some hearing businesses may advertise cheap prices and have hearing aids that look like more sophisticated models, but can be very different in performance.

As always, if you have questions please don’t hesitate to call us at Sandia Hearing Aid Center. We want your search in finding the correct hearing solution to be a pleasant experience.

“This is a very good place to get your hearing aid repaired. If they can’t fix it on the spot, and have to send it to the factory, you can ask for a loaner. If your tube needs to be replaced, they do it for free! Some other places charge up to $10.00 for this service. The people are friendly, and go out of their way to help you. This is the best I’ve found in the Colorado Springs area, and I recommend them unreservedly.”

Great products, great service, friendly. For almost anything medically related, I simply hate setting up appointments and going. Such is not the case here. It was recommended to me by a friend, and I recommend it highly to you. And if you have gone without hearing aids because they didn’t seem to help much, technology has vastly improved them so it is worth giving them a shot.

Sandia Hearing Aid Center is the best place to get a hearing aid. I recommend them to anyone who mentions they need a hearing device or who has hearing loss. So far, I’ve told my dad and grandmother about their superior service, caring attitude, personal attention, hearing tests and great products.
